Then a black-and-gold invitation appears beneath the windshield wiper of his restored Cadillac.

Suddenly Long Beach is hosting a national PLAYERZ BALL, and representatives are arriving from cities across America carrying completely different definitions of game.

Old-school players.

Macks with lethal mouthpieces.

Flamboyant pimps dressed like history.

Gangbangers who believe fear and neighborhood reputation replaced finesse a long time ago.

Young digital players who think the entire old world is obsolete.

The competition is outrageous: entrances, cars, fashion, verbal game, city knowledge, roast sessions, cultural tests, money math, audience judgment and the ultimate challenge:

PLAYERZ BALL digs beneath Long Beach mythology into the city's Black, Chicano, Cambodian, Samoan/Pacific Islander, queer, port, Navy, lowrider, gang and G-funk histories while contestants from around the country bring their own regional codes into the collision.

The jokes are loud.

The consequences are real.

Because somewhere between the old player era and the gang economy, the definition of game changed.

When did game stop being enough?
